3 Tricks to Stay Focused During Meditation

The Oprah-Chopra meditations made meditation main stream. Everybody’s doing it!

It’s a great way to get started with meditation and establish your practice. But what if you want to take the training wheels off and progress from guided meditations to silent meditation?

What can you do to stay focused during silent meditation?

Here are 3 simple tricks…

Focus on your breath

One of the simplest ways to reel in your attention during meditation is to focus on your breath. The great thing about it is that your breath is always with you.

No fancy tools needed.

Here’s how it works…

As you breathe in, feel the air float across the top of your lips, into your nostrils, down your airways and filling your lungs.

As you breathe out, feel your lungs relax and feel the air released through your nose across the top of your lips.

You won’t need to spend the entire meditation being this aware, just whenever your mind starts to wonder.

After a while – without even noticing it – your mind will clear.

Think an affirmation

If focusing on your breath doesn’t help you to stay focused, think of a word.

Peace. Love. Joy. Fun. Ease. Space.

When your mind wonders, repeat the word silently to yourself. If the chatter is really loud – to-do list, project deadlines, worry about kids or money – say the word out loud.

Slowly and softly.

Take it from a clear word, to a whisper, to a thought.

As you slow the pace and volume of the word, your mind will begin to slow. Until eventually, the word isn’t even thought, just felt.

Soon after, you will be in a meditative, but fully present state.

Watch your thoughts

Sometimes, those thoughts just insist on being the star of the show.

When that happens, it’s time to let them entertain you. Let them have their way.

Just sit back and watch.

You can imagine that you’re laying on the sand by the ocean looking up at the clouds and the clouds are your thoughts. You may find yourself fixated by one cloud. Once you recognize that you’re stuck, just thank it and keep the movie playing.

After some time, close your eyes in your imagination. That means, you’re still on the beach. Still laid back. But now, your eyes are closed so you can’t see the clouds.

Now, you can drift away into your meditation. You can slip into one of the other 2 techniques just to ease into staying focused.
