Here’s how I got started in business…

I created an LLC.

I set up my website.

Ordered business cards.

Sent out an announcement email.

And waited…

And waited…

And waited…


With all of my SEO knowledge, over 200 articles on my site, and experience as a business consultant, I got nothing!

They didn’t come.

Sure people were on my site reading articles, but none of them signed up to work with me, and they weren’t downloading my eBook.

I thought all I needed to do was build it and they would come.

I was WRONG!

On paper, it looked like I was doing all the right things. I got lots of kudos from my friends. But, I was frustrated and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing wrong.

I found the solution by accident.

See, every year I do a visioning exercise. At the time, I didn’t have a name for it. It was just something that I did personally to get clear on my long term vision (5 years) and the things that I would do in the next year to step towards that vision.

After doing the visioning exercise, I was casually talking about it with my mastermind group. Some of the members said that they wanted to experience it.

So, I offered it – for free.

I called it the Clarity Kickstart.

I did 5 of them for the group participants. Every one of them had a breakthrough experience. They started to talk about their experience with the rest of the group.

I was onto something.

Pretty soon, I started to get requests for the Clarity Kickstart. I put a price to it and went from there.

Here’s what I stumbled onto by accident

By talking about what I was doing, I started to connect with people in plain language that they could understand. Instead of waiting for people to come to me out of the ethers, I learned that I needed to engage, to converse, to connect.

I learned that business is not the articles of incorporation or the website or the business card.

Business is connecting with people and exchanging value.

It’s that simple.

You open for business when you start talking to people.

Talking to them about life – what’s going on with them and what’s going on with you.

Simple, honest to goodness, conversation.

When you’re in conversation, you can listen for ways that you can help people with your offers.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say that you help people create online courses.

Your website is up, business cards are printed. You even have your business account. You are ready for clients.

You’re still in your day job as a corporate trainer. You’re on your weekly flight to your client. You’re tired of traveling and you would rather spend this time working on your business.

You have the perfect opportunity sitting right next to you.

Strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger – not about what you do – about life. You could talk about where they are traveling to and why, what they are looking forward to, what they love about their hometown.

Before you know it, they’re telling you about their daughter who is a work at home mom. She started her company a couple years ago and it’s going great.

Might be a good time for you to ask if her daughter offers any online courses.

You never know.

If you never have the conversation, you won’t ever know.

You can start that conversation right where you are today – in line at the grocery store, with your friends over dinner, or even with a co-worker at the water cooler.

    • Hi Stephanie, how would I identify your client? Let’s say I’m out with my running group and I’m chatting with someone on a route. What are some key conversations I need to be on the lookout for?

      • 1) Any parent wondering if their child might be hyperactive or have ADHD; child’s teacher is concerned about ability to sit still and focus in class
        2) Women that are frustrated with failed diets, tired of counting calories
        3) Men or women that are concerned they will develop diabetes or other chronic diseases because it “runs in their family.”
